Hey! ¡Hola! Olá!

My name is Elías Haig Alves.

I am an Applied Mathematics and Chemical Engineering student at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN, USA). I work as a Research Intern at the Frist Center for Autism and Innovation finding ways in which engineering can make our world a better place for neurodiverse people. Beyond my passion for science, I also love writing.

Since 2018, I have managed my blog Noción de la Procrastinación, which has received 100000+ visits and been featured in media outlets in Venezuela and beyond. There, I write about everything from science to music and all that lies in between: on a more formal note, I am the Networking head for the News section of the Vanderbilt Hustler, the University’s leading publication.

Previously, I attended the United World College in Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina), an incredible school with the explicit objective of building bridges between people and cultures through inspiring, quality education. Now, I am a volunteer at the Venezuelan chapter of the United World Colleges organization, helping other students from my country access this wonderful opportunity (and, hopefully, have as much fun as I had!).

Whether I am preparing a draft for Noción de la Procrastinación or spending the night at Vanderbilt's Stevenson Library, my goal is always the same: making the world a fairer place. Having grown up during Venezuela's ongoing humanitarian crisis, I know very well how injustice looks like—hence, I try to fight it from every possible front. Do you want to talk more about this? Let's get in touch!
